Run a mathematics or informatics competition in your school
The Australian Maths Trust’s competitions and programs aim to inspire and extend mathematics and algorithmic problem solving for students in primary and secondary schools in Australia and internationally.
All the problems in our maths competitions and programs are uniquely crafted each year by our expert mathematicians and maths teachers to challenge and engage your students.
Learn more about our competitions
Our flagship competition, the Australian Mathematics Competition (AMC), has been delivered in schools since 1978, engaging generations of students in the joy of maths and problem-solving, both in Australia and around the world.
Topics include arithmetic, fractions and ratios, algebra and pre-algebra, geometry, measurement, statistics and probability, and problem-solving topics such as enumeration.
The competition is crafted each year by Australia’s leading educators and academics. The AMC includes a range of 30 questions, including 25 multiple-choice and 5 integer-based questions.
The AMC is available to students from Years 3 to 12 (and overseas equivalent) and takes 60 minutes for primary divisions (Years 3 to 6) and 75 minutes for secondary divisions.
The Computational and Algorithmic Thinking (CAT) competition focuses on the development of problem-solving skills through algorithmic thinking.
The CAT competition features three-stage tasks to encourage algorithmic thinking in students. Ideal for any maths class, the competition aims to build interest and potential in computer programming without requiring any coding skills.
Designed annually by leading educators and industry experts, CAT’s unique problems challenge and extend students’ problem-solving skills.
CAT is offered to students from Years 5 to 12 (and overseas equivalent) and includes 6 multiple-choice and 3 x 3-part integer questions. The competition takes 60 minutes.

Maths Challenge and Maths Enrichment are problem-solving programs delivered by teachers over an extended period to engage and extend students’ mathematical understanding.
Maths Challenge aims to foster students’ understanding of the power of mathematics and the joy of mathematical problem-solving. It provides teachers with engaging and accessible materials to support and develop their maths teaching practice and can help them identify and support talented students.
The Maths Challenge is designed to be run over 3 to 4 weeks, with around 1 hour of class time and around 2 to 3 hours of study time per week.
Students are encouraged to work collaboratively together in groups of three for primary divisions, and groups of two for secondary divisions.
Maths Enrichment is a long-form program delivered by teachers over 12 to 16 weeks using paper-based materials.
Maths Enrichment is an extension program for talented students to help widen their mathematical knowledge and skills. The material develops mathematical concepts not covered by the standard Australian curriculum.
Teachers receive comprehensive printed support material to extend both student learning and their own mathematical teaching practice. Printed materials can be retained by students as an enduring reference through their school years.
