Australian Mathematical Olympiad

The Australian Mathematical Olympiad (AMO) exam has been restructured into three distinct competitions starting 1 January 2026, AMO Summer, AMO Winter, and AMO Finals. In previous years, the AMO was a two-day contest comprising four questions each day and conducted under school supervision (approx. 200 students invited to participate). From 1 January 2026, approximately 250 students are invited to participate in each of AMO Summer and AMO Winter exams. AMO Finals will have approximately 60 students invited to participate, all conducted at exam centres in each state. More information on each exam is outlined below.

The Australian Mathematical Olympiad (AMO) exam

AMO Summer
  • Date: Wednesday 25 February 2026
  • Location: Saturday at school
  • Participants: ~ 250 students
  • Format: 6 questions in 3 hours
  • Purpose: Select students for the Autumn School of Excellence and State Director mentoring programs.

Note: Schools will be notified in January 2026 if a student from your school is invited. All students in year 11 or below in 2026 who attended the AMOC School of Excellence in November 2025 will be invited. Please plan for them to sit AMO Summer. Additionally, some further students who participated in the Australian Training Tournament (ATT) in November 2025, may also be invited.

AMO Winter
  • Date: Wednesday 29 July 2026
  • Location: Saturday at school
  • Participants: ~ 250 students
  • Format: 6 questions in 3 hours
  • Purpose: Select students for AMO Finals.

Note: All students in year 11 or below in 2026 who attend the Autumn School of Excellence in April will be invited. Additionally, some further students participating in the ATT in May, may also be invited.

AMO Finals
  • Date: Tuesday 1 and Wednesday 2 September
  • Location: AMT-organised exam hubs
  • Participants: ~ 60 students
  • Format: 2 papers split over two days (4 questions in 4 hours each day)
  • Purpose: Select students for the Spring School of Excellence.

Selection to sit the AMO Summer: Selections into AMO Summer are made by Australian Mathematical Olympiad Committee (AMOC) State Directors. Invitations are extended to around 200-250 students in year 11 or below across Australia. AMO Summer consists of six challenging problems requiring sound mathematical proofs. Even solving just one of these problems is a significant achievement which students should feel proud of.

Award cutoffs: Cuts for Gold, Silver and Bronze awards were 35, 27 and 16 points, respectively. AMO Summer awards are given approximately as follows:
  • Gold – top 20
  • Silver – top 50
  • Bronze – top 100
  • Honourable Mentions are awarded to those who get full marks for at least one problem, but miss out on a gold, silver or bronze award.

The Olympiad programs are supported by the Australian Government Department of Industry, Science, Energy and Resources through the Science Competitions: Mathematics and Informatics Olympiads grant opportunity. The Olympiad programs are also supported by the Major Partner of the AMT’s Olympiad Program, Jane Street, and Olympiad Program Partner, Optiver.
