Australian Mathematical Olympiad

The Australian Mathematical Olympiad (AMO) exam has been restructured into three distinct competitions starting 1 January 2026, AMO Summer, AMO Winter, and AMO Finals. In previous years, the AMO was a two-day contest comprising four questions each day and conducted under school supervision (approx. 200 students invited to participate). From 1 January 2026, approximately 250 students are invited to participate in each of AMO Summer and AMO Winter exams. AMO Finals will have approximately 60 students invited to participate, all conducted at exam centres in each state. More information on each exam is outlined below.

The Australian Mathematical Olympiad (AMO) exam

AMO Summer
  • Date: Wednesday 25 February 2026
  • Location: Sat at school
  • Participants: ~ 250 students
  • Format: 6 questions in 3 hours
  • Purpose: Select students for the Autumn School of Excellence and State Director mentoring programs.

Note: Schools will be notified in January 2026 if a student from your school is invited. All students in year 11 or below in 2026 who attend the upcoming AMOC School of Excellence in November 2025 will be invited. Additionally, some further students participating in the Australian Training Tournament (ATT) in November 2025, may also be invited.

AMO Winter
  • Date: Wednesday 29 July 2026
  • Location: Sat at school
  • Participants: ~ 250 students
  • Format: 6 questions in 3 hours
  • Purpose: Select students for AMO Finals.

Note: All students in year 11 or below in 2026 who attend the Autumn School of Excellence in April will be invited. Additionally, some further students participating in the ATT in May, may also be invited.

AMO Finals
  • Date: Tuesday 1 and Wednesday 2 September
  • Location: AMT-organised exam hubs
  • Participants: ~ 60 students
  • Format: 2 papers split over two days (4 questions in 4 hours each day)
  • Purpose: Select students for the Spring School of Excellence.

The Olympiad programs are supported by the Australian Government Department of Industry, Science and Resources through the Science Competitions: Mathematics and Informatics Olympiads grant opportunity. The Olympiad programs are also supported by the Trust’s National Sponsor of the Australian Informatics and Mathematical Olympiads, Jane Street.

The AMT’s EGMO initiative received grant funding from the Australian Government through the Department of Industry, Science and Resources under the Inspiring Australia – Science Engagement Programme.
