AJMO is a brand new competition designed for students up to Year 8 who are interested in challenging mathematics and Olympiad-style problem solving but who are not yet ready for the AIMO. It provides an accessible introduction to mathematical reasoning, creativity and problem solving in a competition environment. The competition aims to give younger students a chance to spend time on challenging mathematical problems. The problems have been designed so that students should not see the answer immediately and may not know how to proceed immediately. We encourage students to play around with the problems, use pen and paper, write lists, draw pictures, jot down ideas, and spend time thinking. The AJMO may be used to identify students who are suitable for further enrichment and challenge.
AJMOÂ consists of:Â
- 10 problemsÂ
- 90 minutes working timeÂ
- Online delivery onlyÂ
- Integer-answer responsesÂ
- No written solutions requiredÂ
Students enter a single integer answer (0-999) for each question.Â
Can students enter both AJMO and AIMO?
As both competitions are scheduled for the same day, schools should select the competition that is most appropriate for each student. Students in Year 8 or below who are ready to tackle AIMO should still do so. AJMO is an alternative opportunity for less experienced students.
