Chief Executive Officer

The Australian Mathematics Trust is seeking an outstanding Chief Executive Officer to lead the organisation through its next phase of growth, impact and strategic development.

This is an opportunity to lead an organisation with deep academic credibility, a passionate national volunteer network, and a meaningful role in shaping Australia’s future STEM capability.

AMT is a leading not-for-profit organisation dedicated to fostering a nation of creative problem solvers through mathematics and informatics. Through competitions, enrichment programs and Olympiad pathways, AMT inspires and challenges students, teachers and the wider community, and plays an important role in Australia’s educational and mathematical landscape.

Working closely with the Board, staff, volunteers and stakeholders the CEO will lead AMT’s strategic direction and long-term sustainability, maintain the quality and integrity of its programs, support its highly valued volunteer community, and strengthen relationships across education, academia, government and industry.

You are a collaborative and purpose-driven leader with strong executive capability, sound judgement, commercial acumen, and a genuine appreciation for the importance of mathematics, informatics and problem-solving in education and society.

The role is based in Canberra, ACT with some national travel required. An attractive executive remuneration package will be negotiated with the successful candidate.

Non-Executive Directors

The Australian Mathematics Trust is seeking two Non-Executive Directors to join the board of AMT at a meaningful moment in the organisation’s journey. AMT exists to develop young Australians’ problem-solving potential through competitions, enrichment programs, and international representation, and its board plays a direct role in protecting and advancing that mission. We are looking for people who bring experience in child safety and program delivery for children, advocacy or policy engagement in education, science, technology, or EdTech, or commercial and entrepreneurial leadership with a proven ability to assess and advance new ideas.

This is a voluntary role that asks something genuine of the people who take it on: preparation, presence, and a real commitment to the purpose.  It offers something genuine in return: the chance to contribute at governance level to one of Australia’s most respected educational institutions. If you believe in the power of mathematical and computational problem-solving to shape young lives, we would welcome your application.

Position description can be found here.

Applications are managed by Derwent Search on behalf of AMT. Please direct applications to Derwent Search via email to Rebecca Schwarz: rschwarz@derwentsearch.com.au.

Applications will close on Monday 15th June, 2026.

Volunteer With Us

Volunteers are central to everything we do at the AMT. Our strength lies in the expertise and dedication of our volunteers who support our many varied activities as educators, problem writers, and program leaders.

Some of the core volunteer roles at the AMT are to support the Competitions Problems Committees.

These committees are comprised of educators and mathematicians with a passion for and interest in mathematical or algorithmic problem-solving. The committees create content (problems and solutions) we use and publish for all our major competitions and enrichment activities. The content creators work closely with smaller groups of teachers and mathematicians who serve as moderators to review the content to make sure our problems are the best they can possibly be.

If you are interested in becoming a volunteer problem creator or moderator at the AMT, please contact us.
