Maths Olympiad Program Important update

The following changes to the Maths Olympiad Program take effect on 1 January 2026.

The Australian Mathematical Olympiad (AMO)

The AMO has been restructured into three distinct competitions:

AMO Summer
  • Date: Wednesday 25 February 2026
  • Location: Saturday at school
  • Participants: ~ 250 students
  • Format: 6 questions in 3 hours
  • Purpose: Select students for the Autumn School of Excellence and State Director mentoring programs.

Note: Schools will be notified in January 2026 if a student from your school is invited. All students in year 11 or below in 2026 who attended the AMOC School of Excellence in November 2025 will be invited. Additionally, some further students who participated in the Australian Training Tournament (ATT) in November 2025, may also be invited.

AMO Winter
  • Date: Wednesday 29 July 2026
  • Location: Saturday at school
  • Participants: ~ 250 students
  • Format: 6 questions in 3 hours
  • Purpose: Select students for AMO Finals.

Note: All students in year 11 or below in 2026 who attend the Autumn School of Excellence in April will be invited. Additionally, some further students participating in the ATT in May, may also be invited.

AMO Finals
  • Date: Tuesday 1 and Wednesday 2 September
  • Location: AMT-organised exam hubs
  • Participants: ~ 60 students
  • Format: 2 papers split over two days (4 questions in 4 hours each day)
  • Purpose: Select students for the Spring School of Excellence.

Australian Team Selection Tests (TSTs)

TSTs for the Australian International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) and Australian European Girls Mathematical Olympiad (EGMO) teams will now be held at state exam hubs instead of during training camps.

  • Dates: Thursday 29 Jan, Friday 30 Jan, Monday 2 Feb, Tuesday 3 Feb 2026
  • Location: AMT-organised exam hubs
  • Participants: ~ 30 students
  • Format: Each test includes 3 problems over 4.5 hours
  • Purpose: Final selection for the 2026 IMO and EGMO teams and Autumn School invitations.

AMOC Senior Contest Retired

The AMOC Senior Contest will no longer be held after 2025.

Changes to Training Camps​

Our training camps have been renamed and restructured. All training camps will be in-person going forward and the number of participants has reduced. Students previously selected for online participation will now be mentored by State Directors in their respective state programs.The changes to our training camps are shown below.
