Announcing the appointment of Mat Meriaux as CEO of the AMT

Mat Meriaux, CEO

The Board of the Australian Mathematics Trust is delighted to announce the appointment of Mat Meriaux as our new Chief Executive Officer. Mat will commence in the role in December 2025.

This appointment follows an extensive national and international search conducted over the past six months. The Board was fortunate to consider a strong field of candidates from across the education, not-for-profit, and government sectors. Mat emerged as the outstanding choice to lead the AMT into its next chapter.

Many within the AMT community will already know Mat from his previous time at the Trust, where he served as Deputy CEO between 2018 and 2021. During that period, he built strong and trusted relationships with staff and volunteers, enabling significant progress on a range of projects. Most notably, he played a central role in launching Problemo, accelerating delivery of the main functionality during the COVID-19 pandemic to support teachers with high-quality online problem-solving materials.

Since leaving the AMT, Mat has led major national and international initiatives, including overseeing the delivery of all Volleyball events at the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games. In these complex environments, he has demonstrated a remarkable capacity to bring together groups with diverse interests and objectives to achieve shared success. Through these experiences, Mat brings the strategic vision, operational discipline, and values-driven leadership that will take the AMT forward.

What stands out most is Mat’s enduring commitment to the communities in which he works. He returns to the Trust with a clear focus on ensuring that everyone who contributes to our work feels supported, heard, and valued.

In Mat’s own words:

“It is an incredible privilege to return to the AMT, an organisation that has shaped my journey and continues to inspire so many across Australia. I believe the true strength of our mathematics and informatics programs lies not only in their excellence, but in the passion, dedication and collaboration of the people behind them. My commitment is to foster an environment where every staff member, volunteer, teacher and student feels valued, supported and empowered to help shape the future of the AMT together.”

Mat is passionate about supporting young Australians on their mathematical journey – from those in our Olympiad teams, representing the country on the international stage, to those just discovering the joy of solving their first problem. He sees the upcoming IMO in 2025 as a unique opportunity to showcase our work and deepen our impact.

We look forward to welcoming Mat back to the Trust later this year and are excited by the energy, insight, and care he brings to the role. We also take this opportunity to thank all those who contributed to the recruitment process and who continue to make the AMT a place where excellence, community, and opportunity meet.

Warm regards,

Geoff Shuetrim
Chair, AMTT Ltd Board
