The AMT congratulates the Australian team on delivering an outstanding performance at the 38th International Olympiad in Informatics (IOI), with Nathan Zhou awarded a gold medal, Justin Goh and Philip Liu awarded silver medals, and Matthew Lin receiving an honourable mention.
Held in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, from 9 to 16 August 2026, the IOI is one of the world’s most prestigious computer science competitions. In 2026, the competition brought together approximately 375 contestants from 92 countries to compete.
Before the official competition began, the Australian team participated in a pre-IOI training camp in Sydney from 1 to -5 August, hosted at UNSW Sydney, AMT’s strategic higher education partner. The team then travelled to Uzbekistan to complete their training before the Olympiad commenced on 9 August. Across two demanding competition days, each student worked independently to solve complex problems against some of the strongest young programmers in the world.

- Justin Goh, Christ Church Grammar School (WA) – Silver Medal
- Philip Liu, Scotch College (VIC) – Silver Medal
- Matthew Lin, Scotch College (VIC) – Honourable Mention
A key highlight of the team’s achievements is Nathan Zhou’s gold medal, achieved at his third and final time at the IOI. Alongside Nathan’s result, silver medals for Justin Goh and Philip Liu, and an honourable mention for Matthew Lin, reflect a strong overall team performance and the continued depth of talent within Australia’s informatics pathway.

International Olympiads challenge students to perform under significant pressure, and this team has done so with focus, determination, and integrity. Nathan’s gold medal is an exceptional result, so too the silver medals achieved by Justin and Philip, and Matthew’s honourable mention. This is a wonderful outcome for them all.
