The scores are in and Australia has secured one gold medal, two silver medals, two bronze and one honourable mention. Over the past fortnight, our Australian IMO team have been over in Shanghai preparing and competing at the 67th International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) in Shanghai, China.
The competition was held from 10–21 July 2026, with the official examinations taking place on 15 and 16 July. Beyond the contest itself, the IMO provided students with opportunities to collaborate with like-minded peers from around the world, experience different cultures and form lifelong friendships.
The competition brought together approximately 670 students from more than 100 countries to tackle some of the most challenging mathematics problems in the world.
The Australian team competed over two days of rigorous examinations, with students required to solve six proof-based problems covering advanced areas of mathematics including algebra, geometry, number theory and combinatorics.
Congratulations to our team below:
- Amber Li, Pymble Ladies’ College (NSW) – Gold Medal
- Liam Celinski, North Sydney Boys High School (NSW) – Bronze Medal
- Jayden Pan, Shore School (NSW) – Silver Medal
- Kevin Tang, Glen Waverley Secondary College (VIC) – Bronze Medal

- Tao Wong, St Peter’s College (SA) – Honourable Mention
Among the team’s achievements, Amber Li’s gold medal marks a significant milestone, adding an IMO gold to an already outstanding record that includes multiple gold medals at the European Girls’ Mathematical Olympiad. Jayden Pan also continued his impressive Olympiad journey, earning silver at his second IMO after securing gold for Australia at the 2025 IMO on home soil.
For Matthew Wang, Tao Wong, Kevin Tang and Liam Celinski, this year marked their first time representing Australia at the IMO. To achieve medals and recognition on debut at one of the world’s most demanding academic competitions is an exceptional accomplishment.
Laura Stuart, Acting CEO for the AMT congratulated the team on their achievements. “Congratulations to our six outstanding students who have represented Australia with distinction at the 2026 International Mathematical Olympiad.
